Book Review: The Solomon Scroll by Alex Lukeman

The Solomon Scroll is the 10th book in The Project series by Alex Lukeman. The pace is intense and the story keeps moving very well. The team is back together and this time they get to evaluate a possible new member while also saving the world and extracting revenge on their attackers. Edge of your seat thrills are following in this installment, so get ready!

The contents of a two thousand year old scroll set in motion a deadly quest for the tomb of Solomon and the long lost treasure of the Second Jewish Temple. The Project team is up against a madman who believes he is the last high priest of an ancient and cruel god. He seeks the Seal of Solomon and the mystical powers he's sure it will bring him. He'll stop at nothing to get what he wants, including murder and treachery.
From the streets of Beirut to the barrens of Saudi Arabia and the wild canyons of Ethiopia, the Project team follows an ancient trail of clues in search of Solomon's bones and the sacred heritage of a nation.
The Solomon Scroll flowed well and the pace is fast as the team travels all over the world. It was great to see new introductory characters in Diego and Eggleston as well. It would be nice to get to see more of the team on a more personal level so we get a bit more depth to some of the story, though. I didn't feel as bad for Stephanie as I thought I should and I felt that the teams "revenge" wasn't worked on enough. It just felt that something was missing in that portion. I must say "Thank you!", though, for bringing Stephanie onto the stage a bit more. All together, this is a solid story line and I can't wait to see what happens next. It'll be nice to dig a bit more into the characters again but still a great story and series. Definitely worth adding to your collection.

I received a complimentary copy of The Solomon Scroll from Alex Lukeman for beta reading. This review isn't required but it's something I like to do. The opinions in this review are mine alone and from my own personal viewpoint.

Book Review: Black Rose by Alex Lukeman

Black Rose is the 9th book in The Project series by Alex Lukeman. This fast paced thrill ride picks up right after The Eye of Shiva bringing The Project and AEON back together for a final confrontation. Assassinations, an incurable plague, and control of the world are just some of the things you'll find along with a well running theme of Selena Connor's background story. Things are really starting to heat up!

Amazon book description:
A lethal plague resurrected from the bones of the dead is stolen from a secret biological warfare lab hidden in the mountains of North Korea. There's no cure and it's one hundred percent fatal. If it gets loose, millions will die. The men who have it want to reduce the world's population and bring down the global economy as part of a plan to establish world dominance.
Nick Carter and Selena Connor of the Project are up against their old nemesis, a centuries old conspiracy called AEON. This time, Director Elizabeth Harker is determined to eliminate AEON once and for all. It's touch and go as events build toward the final confrontation, with no certainty that things will turn out well. Along the way, dark secrets from Selena's past come to light. The Project team takes on another dangerous mission, with no guarantee that any of them will survive.
Black Rose keeps up the pace that Alex Lukeman has set in the previous books and has the team moving from the US to Europe to South America and then back again. There are secrets that are finally revealed, new revelations that will continue the story on to who knows where, and a shake up within the team. I am pumped for the 10th book because I can't wait to see where this goes. While I love the missions that The Project go on and the interesting events that seems to happen to them, I am really enjoying the continuing story line and unexpected twists in the lives of Selena and Nick. We get to learn a bit about some of the others (more on Stephanie, please!) but it's obvious that Selena and Nick are the main characters and the twists and turns they encounter really bring this series to life. This is definitely a must read.

Book Review: The Eye of Shiva by Alex Lukeman

The Eye of Shiva by Alex Lukeman is the 8th book in The Project series and it will have you on the edge of your seat. Nick, Selena, Ronnie, Lamont, Elizabeth, and Stephanie are all back to face off with an unknown foe and stop a nuclear war between India and Pakistan. There's a lot of unknowns but The Project works through brainstorming and Elizabeth's intuition to piece things together. The only problem is, are they able to stop things before it's to late? Hang on to your seats!

Book Summary:
On a mission to the Philippines Nick Carter of the Project finds ancient gold coins in a terrorist stronghold. The terrorists have been using the gold to buy weapons. Where did the coins come from? The discovery sets the Project team on a collision course with a ruthless terrorist who dreams of an Islamic Caliphate in India and a dying spy from India's CIA seeking revenge for the murder of his wife and son. All the while, a secret global conspiracy is manipulating events from behind the scenes. The conspirators want to provoke war between Pakistan and India and launch a nuclear missile at China.

Clues hint that the gold coins are part of a legendary treasure looted from India in the 18th century by a Persian King. Among the stolen artifacts is a mystical jewel known as the Eye of Shiva. One man is obsessed with finding it and fulfilling a prophecy predicting the destruction of India's enemies.

Nick and his lover Selena struggle with their doubts about each other even as they risk their lives against murderous enemies. As the war drums grow louder and tensions rise on the sub-continent, Nick and Selena are caught in a race against time to stop a nuclear war that will devastate China, Pakistan and India.

The Eye of Shiva is a fast moving story of love, revenge and intrigue, guaranteed to keep you turning pages.
This is a great addition to The Project series and continues the relationship aspect of Nick and Selena while adding in a lot of suspense and thrills for the team and the situations they find themselves having to resolve. One of the things I love about The Project series is that the hero's can, and do, get hurt, have personal conflicts, and you never know what may happen. A lot of books have the hero's win and save the day and there aren't many, if any, consequences but not the Project. Anything goes.. I had no clue how this story would play out since we've seen before that as soon as you think it's safe things go bad but the story line introduced us to new characters and a thrilling plot that leaves you wanting more. It also sets the stage very nicely for a continuation of confrontations with AEON.

This is more than just a simple story, it's a series that continues on and leaves you wanting more after you're done reading. Alex has done a great job of finishing the stories in a way that makes you want to move on to the next book right away and see what's next for The Project, as well as the individual characters. Definitely pick up The Eye of Shiva and get ready for a fast paced thriller that will not disappoint.

I received a complimentary copy of The Eye of Shiva in PDF format from Alex Lukeman for review. The opinions in this review are mine alone and from my own personal viewpoint.

Book Review: Cibola by David Wood

Cibola by David Wood is the second book in the Dane Maddock Adventures and it continues in the same fast moving action we found in Dourado. A slightly new cast is brought in, new locations are explored, and a hot fire romance is in the air. Twists, turns, and everything in between are brought into this new adventure but, with Dane and Bones around, there's nothing to fear - unless you work for the Dominion.

Dane Maddock and Uriah "Bones" Bonebreak, ex-Navy SEALs turned marine archaeologists, are back and they seem to like to accidentally fall into great adventures. Maddock starts off by rescuing the beautiful Jade Ihara from an underwater dig where she has found a Spanish breastplate that's more than just a historical artifact. After close examination of the breastplate, and a little of each other, they discover that it gives clues to the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola. Bones is out in Utah, far from the ocean, helping his cousin at a dig when they suddenly make a startling discovery that Jesus may have visited the New World during His ministry. As more information is uncovered, the dig comes under attack, Bones finds a gold disc, and, with the help of reporter Amanda Shores, Bones escapes. The highlight of all this is that they learn who was attacking them, the Dominion. While this has all been going on, both Dane and Jade set off to follow the clues but the Dominion follows them at every turn. Maddock, Bones, Jade, Saul (Jade's assistant), and Amanda all get together to collaborate recent events and find that their separate digs actually work together! They also discover that someone is feeding information to the Dominion as they go and this starts to create stress throughout the group as they begin working on the last clue. It's a roller coaster ride as they fend off attacks from the Dominion, find and decipher the clues, and work together (or against each other at times) to find the Seven Cities of Cibola.

There is a lot that goes into this series and I believe that David Wood has done a fabulous job in not only telling a cool story (that could be made into movies, ahem) but also developing the characters into people you care about and want to know more about. They are rich characters and each has their own unique personalities that clash or compliment each other well. Bones gets on my nerves a bit but A) that's his personality and B) I'm more like Maddock anyways and his reactions pretty much parallel mine. I actually get the relationship they have and it's a perfect match. The love interests take us into a different area of their personalities as well and it helps to break up the testosterone levels a bit. It's a nice twist and definitely made Cibola a very enjoyable read.

Book Review: Dance with the Enemy by Rob Sinclair

Dance with the Enemy by Rob Sinclair is a great first novel that introduces us to an excellent cast of characters, a great story, and descriptive details that will capture you and hold you tight. It's a great thrill ride full of twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next. It's a great beginning to a series that has a lot of life and potential, too.

Carl Logan is an asset for the Joint Intelligence Agency (JIA) along with his boss, Charles McCabe (Mackie). Logan is troubled and broken from recently being captured and tortured by the world's most ruthless terrorist, Youssef Salim. A brief look into Logan's past helps to start painting the reason for his troubles but things are about to change. Frank Modena, the Attorney General of the United States of America, is abducted while in Paris and Logan finds himself in active service again to find and rescue Modena. Although most of the JIA committee members don't want Logan on this mission, Mackie stands up for him and shows his dedication and unique friendship towards Logan. Logan begins his search with unlikely leads and follows his gut to begin following the trail.

As Logan begins to piece things together he encounters Special Agent Angela Grainger of the FBI. While each is suspicious of the other, they combine their forces to look for Modena, as well as help each other resolve similar past issues. They are hot on the trail of one of the world's worst terrorists but was Modena kidnapped to supply demands for a terrorist group or are there other ulterior motives at play? The reasons for taking the Attorney General are starting to become blurred while relationships are formed but there is more at stake than just the life of Modena. Revenge and closure, betrayal and trust. Lines are crossed but this is what it takes to dance with the enemy.

Dance with the Enemy was really good, especially for a first novel. The one element I can't get over was the detail given in the book. The descriptions given of the areas that were traveled were amazing and made me feel as if I was actually there seeing what was being described. The sequence descriptions help me visualize the action as it took place, too, and it was very realistic. Nothing over-the-top, no overkill - just true to life scenarios that really helped make this such a believable story. Side note - There are torture scenes but they aren't horrible. I hate torture scenes in general but this was bearable and for that I'm happy. this would have to be the only issue I had.

There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you focused and the story was very well thought out. I definitely recommend putting Dance with the Enemy on your list of must reads.

Book Review: Area 7 by Matthew Reilly

Area 7 by Matthew Reilly is the second book in the Shane Schofield series and it offers the same great character depth and development, storyline, and action that we got with Ice Station. Of course the stakes have to be upped on the second round and Reilly doesn't disappoint at all. Scarecrow and his team have to protect the President while he is being hunted by one of the best armed forces in the world, stop a nuclear attack on US soil, protect a vaccine for a deadly, ethnic biological weapon, and keep crazy prisoners at bay. Just another day at the office for Shane Schofield.

After the incident that transpired at Wilkes Ice Station, Scarecrow is reassigned to work on the Presidential detail aboard Marine One. He also brings along a team with him where we get to reacquaint ourselves with Mother and Fox while meeting Books son, Book II, new Marines, and the Secret Service's Special Agent Juliet Janson. Things are going well until a visit to Area 7 brings on a new game that no one is prepared for. The President is being hunted by the US Air Force's 7th Squadron while the Marines and Secret Service try to protect him and get him safely to the "football" so that a nuclear war doesn't start within the US borders. A secret virus targeting specific ethnic groups, as well as its vaccine, is being targeted by another group all while the most vile of prisoners have escaped and are waging their own war on everyone inside Area 7. Twists and turns keep everyone on their toes but when you have the Scarecrow and his trusty maghook, nothing is impossible.

Area 7 was a great story and I actually enjoyed the one locale setup again except for the boat chase. The boat chase just dragged on a bit for me but it was still good and, I suppose, needed to continue (or stretch out) the story a bit. Otherwise, WOW! The characters are moving forward nicely and you can't help but become attached to the team and what they go through. I was on the edge of the couch in anticipation for most of this book and it just moved through like you were a part of it. Great way to keep a lot of the old elements (Maghook, anyone?) while introducing new roles for the heroes, and heroines, and new concepts that could, maybe happen. Now, what happens next.....?

Book Review: Ice Station by Matthew Reilly

Ice Station by Matthew Riley is a fast-paced, edge of your seat thrill ride that will leave you gasping for air and begging for more. The characters are well developed and easy to associate with, the plot is plausible, and the action is fast and exhilarating. Reilly brings in a great setting, interesting characters and back-stories, and a great host of weapons that make you go "Wow". Prepare for adventure.....

The setting for this is unique to some of the books I have read lately because it centers on one locale, Antarctica (well, more specifically Wilkes Ice Station and a small area surrounding it), instead of traveling all around the globe. I was a little hesitant at first when I found this out but I decided to give it try anyways. It seems that an alien spacecraft may have been discovered at the Wilkes Ice Station in Antarctica and the US is sending a crack Marine Recon Unit (16) in to guard the station until reinforcements arrive. Lt. Shane Schofield, call-sign Scarecrow, leads this unit and finds out there is more going on than meets the eye. From dealing with French "scientists", a French paratrooper unit, a large British SAS force, possible aliens, and a secret US organization, Scarecrow and his team - Mother, Fox, Book, and more - will find out just how tough they are and whether they can complete the mission they've been assigned with.

The main characters are gripping and the depth and detail that Reilly gives to each of these main characters makes me feel as if I'm a part of Scarecrow's team as well. While some of the story dragged on for me, which I find to be an issue with single location settings anyways, there were enough surprises, edge of your seat moments, and just plain awesomeness to keep me interested and coming back for more. While many people have complained that a lot of the action is just to far out there, I have to say that it's always plausible and Reilly does an excellent job in making you feel like you are there in the middle of the action, ready to jump in and help at any time. I loved this story and can't wait to continue on in the series.

P.S. - I want a maghook. :-)

Book Review: Splashdown by David Wood and Rick Chesler

Splashdown by David Wood and Rick Chesler is a Dane and Bones Origins Story that gives us another look at the early adventures that these two Navy SEALs had together. This also helps to give some background into how they learned many of their skills used in marine archaeology after their "retirement" from the Navy. This is a fast paced ride that I couldn't put down and includes a lot of interesting characters and..... creatures. I won't explain much on those since i think they are an awesome part of this story that you will just have to read to find out about.

This is the first Origins Story I have read and it gives just as much excitement as the Dane Maddock Adventure series but with more military background since both Dane and Bones are Navy SEALs. We join Dane and Bones while they are finishing up submersible pilot training in the Pacific and get to see how the two learn to work together and forge their close bond. The training comes in handy and is one reason they are picked for a special assignment to retrieve a Cold War-era nuclear bomb a few hundred miles off the coast of Florida. Excitement and mayhem are running right at the start of this adventure and it doesn't let up. From dealing with a television crew, to underwater submersible fights, to escaping from a crazed Russian submariner, Dane and Bones take us on a non-stop adventure where the fate of Washington D.C. will be decided and they will face off against some pretty deadly creatures you might find hanging out with Godzilla. You'll see. :-)

Splashdown is definitely worth a read and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. I even read it a second time right away and was still captivated by it. I can't wait to go back and read the rest of the Origins Stories. I did receive a complimentary copy of Splashdown in eBook format for the Kindle from David Wood for preview and review. The opinions in this review are mine alone and from my own personal viewpoint.

Book Review: The Vault by Boyd Morrison

The Vault

The Vault by Boyd Morrison is the second book in the Tyler Locke series and it doesn't disappoint at all. The Vault continues the fast-paced action and memorable characters that The Ark: A Novel introduced us to. We even get to meet some new characters (The General, anyone?) and go on a new adventure with Locke and Grant Westfield! Who's ready to find King Midas and his golden touch?

Although Locke doesn't go looking for trouble, it seems to find him on a regular basis lately. He is told that there is a bomb on the ferry he is riding and he only has twenty-eight minutes to diffuse it or everyone will be killed along with him on the ferry. This scenario brings Locke together with a new face, Stacy Benedict, and sends them on a wild adventure to rescue their loved ones and stop a thief from stealing a mythical treasure and changing the financial status of the world. Jordan Orr, the stories bad guy, uses Locke's engineering genius and Benedict's PhD in the Classics to solve a ancient puzzle in the Archimedes Codex and find King Midas's final resting place.

The adventure takes the team from Seattle to a deadly race on the autobahn to the underground canals of Naples. This adventure is just as good as The Ark: A Novel and Boyd Morrison does a great job at bringing this story to life. Morrison does a great job at mixing history and science together to bring about a believable story that makes you wonder just how much of this is actually possible. I am sad that Dilara Kenner didn't make it back in the picture but Stacy Benedict did bring a nice touch to the story. Also, just as Indiana Jones has a whip and John Rambo has a knife, Tyler Locke carries his Leatherman everywhere he goes and it helps to get him out of a lot of trouble along the way.

I highly recommend this book and know fans of this genre will not be disappointed. I haven't had this much fun reading a series in quite a while and it is refreshing to see such new perspectives on these histories and legends. Keep up the great work Boyd!!

The Ark: A Novel by Boyd Morrison [Book Review]

The Ark: A Novel by Boyd Morrison is a fascinating adventure with intriguing characters and a epic quest that will have you turning the pages faster than ever before. I picked this up after getting the The Roswell Conspiracy off of Amazon on a Daily Deal and since I like to begin a series in order, I decided to give The Ark: A Novel a shot. I have to admit I was really surprised with how well this book was written and I couldn't put it down. There is a lot of fast-paced action, twists and turns, a completely new view (for me, anyways) on Noah's Ark, and the characters are great.

Archaeologist Dilara Kenner is contacted by an old family friend with information regarding her father who has been missing for several years. This meeting is the beginning of a wild ride that spans from Seattle, WA to Turkey and everywhere in between. Although the story starts with Kenner, the main focus is on Tyler Locke, former Army combat engineer and current engineer at Gordian, and his best friend Grant Westfield who served with Locke and is currently an electrical engineer at Gordian as well. The purpose of these characters coming together and flying all over the world? To stop the destruction of the world's population and find Noah's Ark of course!

The ideas, places, events, and characters are so real that you feel like you are a part of the adventure too. Reading the Afterword, Morrison explains a lot about the ideas used in the book and how they are real or used in the story. Morrison's blend of reality versus imaginary is extremely well done and helps to make the story move in a very believable direction that a reader can immerse in. It would make for a great movie too!

Fossil fuel has an ageless affinity with dinosaurs. To create oil, dinosaurs died. Now, in this riveting action thriller, the tables are turning!

The perfect energy storm is sweeping over the United States: Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown has paralyzed nuclear expansion globally, BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill has stalled deep water drilling, Arab countries are in turmoil causing doubt about access to future oil, hurricanes hitting the Gulf’s oil rigs and refineries have increased due to global warming, and the nation’s Strategic Oil Supply is riding on empty.

As the energy storm intensifies, the nation’s access to Arab oil, once supplying over sixty percent of our fossil fuel, is being threatened causing citizens to panic for lack of gas at the pumps, stranding cars across the country and inciting riots.

The United States must find new sources of domestic fossil fuel urgently or face an energy crisis that will plunge the nation into a deep depression, much worse than that of 1929.

At the last moment of desperation, the U.S. discovers the world’s largest fossil fuel deposit, in a remote mountain range revealed by glacier thaw within Alaska’s Noatak National Preserve surrounding six and a half million acres.

Preventing access to the oil is a colony of living fossil dinosaurs that will protect its territory to the death.

In preliminary civilian and military scouts, nobody gets out alive; nobody can identify the predator--until Dr. Kimberly Fulton, Curator of Paleontology at New York’s Museum of Natural History, is flown into the nearly-inaccessible area by Scott Chandler, the Marine veteran helicopter pilot who’s the Park’s Manager of Wildlife. After page after compelling page of non-stop action, all hell breaks loose when Fulton’s teenage son and his girlfriend vanish into the Park.

Will the nation’s military be jeopardized for lack of mobility fuel, and will Americans nationwide run out of gas and be stranded, or will the U.S. Marines succeed in penetrating this remote mountain range in northwestern Alaska to restore fossil fuel supplies in time to save the nation from the worst energy catastrophe in recorded history?
