Stromboli - An Easy Family Meal

I use to make a delicious Stromboli when I worked at a pizzeria and I got to thinking about it the other day which, of course, made me hungry for a Stromboli. I happened across an excellent recipe from Pillsbury that I just had to share. I have altered the recipe slightly from Pillsbury but that is the beauty of a Stromboli, you can add or take-away anything from it to make it your own creation!

Olive Garden Zuppa Toscana Recipe

This is one of the best soups I have ever had. My wife and I love this and it will definitely warm you up on a cold day. This is the original recipe that is used at Olive Garden but it has been toned down by Tuscan Recipes to serve between 6-8 people. I have altered the amount of crushed red peppers as well since it was way to spicy for our tastes with the original amount.

Grilled Double-Cheese and Bacon Sandwich

Well, I received an email the other day from Betty Crocker with various recipes on it and this beauty jumped right out at me - Grilled Double-Cheese and Bacon Sandwich. What is not to love about this sandwich? Bacon. Cheese. Grilled. The best of everything.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are fairly easy to begin with so cooking this beauty up should be quick and easy. I pre-cook the bacon so that it is nice and crispy and then layer the Cheddar cheese, bacon, and Mozzarella cheese between the bread. I usually use a griddle to cook this but you can also use an electric, gas, or charcoal grill.

  • 8 Slices of bacon
  • 4 (3/4-oz.) slices of Cheddar cheese
  • 4 (3/4-oz.) slices of Mozzarella cheese
  • 8 (1/2-inch-thick) slices of regular or sourdough bread
The recipe does make four sandwiches and you can double up on the bacon if you want to add a bit more of that delicious bacon flavor to the sandwich.

Almost Amish [Book Review]

Have you ever wanted a slower, simpler, more sustainable approach to life?

Almost Amish: One Woman's Quest for a Slower, Simpler, More Sustainable Life by Nancy Sleeth is a great book that talks about getting back to the simpler things in life. C’mon, let’s admit it, we are living in a technology-based environment. We are constantly plugged in 24/7. Everywhere you look there are cell phones, computers, televisions, or even tablets such as the iPad. We have the world at our fingertips!

Whatever happened to getting outside and spending time with our families? I think it’s time we all take a step back and realize what’s more important. Technology is always going to be around, but our children and families will not. Every moment we spend or don’t spend with our families is important. How are our kids going to view us? I don’t want to be viewed as the parent that was always on the computer, phone, or etc and never made time for them.

I like how Nancy touches on Biblical principles of finances. She encourages readers to save, and discourages on spending on what we really don’t need. So many of us have so much “stuff” that we really could live without but yet we think at the time we just have to have it. That “stuff” creates clutter and eventually starts piling up. Then we start looking at bigger houses to hold more “stuff” and even buying storage units. In reality, we really don’t need it.
Nancy also talks about how we need to be more of a service to God and our neighbors. We need to prepare our children for adulthood. We need to equip our children with the tools they need to survive. While technology might be good in some sense, it does nothing to teach our children how to be morally responsible and happy in life. We need to teach them that it’s a reward to help take care of others especially their aging parents and grandparents.
While I don’t think we need to go to the extremes like the Amish, I do think that we can take a lot of these principles and apply them to our lives. We can focus on trying to get outside more with our family, and what we can do to serve others in our neighborhood.

I received this book for free from Tyndale House Publishers for this review. My thoughts and opinions during this review are my own. Reviewed by Robin B.

Catch Me If You Can [Book Review]

I just finished reading  Catch Me If You Can: The True Story of a Real Fake written by Frank W. Abagnale with Stan Redding and let me tell you, it is a wild ride that you will not want to stop reading about. This is the true story of Frank Abagnale and how he posed as a PanAm airline co-pilot, pediatrician, lawyer, and a college professor to "paper" the world with bad checks and making a small fortune of over 2 million dollars. He went by several alias for each escapade and was always one step ahead of law-enforcement. Abagnale writes this story from his point of view with a fun and witty tale that allows you to feel as if you are there with him running his scams.
